Biro Island
The world’s largest breeding ground for rare seabirds
Biro Island is a small uninhabited island just six kilometers off the coast in Kadokawa Bay. Known as an ideal fishing spot, it is also famous as the largest breeding ground in the world for the Japanese murrelet.
The Japanese murrelet is an endangered bird found only in the seas around Japan.
The small bird, similar to a miniature penguin, is just 20 cm in length, and it features several long feathers on its head forming a crown. It is not very good at flying due to its short wings, but it is an expert swimmer, and uses its wings to fly through the water like penguins do. The birds begin returning to Biro Island every December to lay their eggs, and the chicks then eventually leave around May in the following year. Many people come to the island from around the world to research and observe the birds.
The island is a protected area, and cannot be entered by the general public, but visitors can watch the birds from boats off shore.
