五ヶ瀬ハイランドスキー場
Gokase Highland Ski Resort
The southernmost ski resort in Japan
* The resort closed for the 2024 season (December 2023 through March 2024) due to the damages from the September 2022 typhoon. The resort will reopen for the 2025 season on December 20, 2024.
Even though Miyazaki Prefecture is relatively warm throughout the year, snow still accumulates in the mountainous areas during the winter. One such area is Gokase Town on the border with Kumamoto Prefecture, where the southernmost natural ski resort in Japan, the Gokase Highland Ski Resort, is located.
Reaching a maximum altitude of 1,610 meters, the panoramic view of Aso and Kokonoe from the slopes is spectacular.
The five courses at the resort range in difficulty from beginner to advanced, so you can choose the course to ski on that fits your level.
There is also a family slope where families with children can play in the snow. The resort’s ski center also contains a ski school, and they even offer rental skis and snowboards, so you can have fun without worrying about a lack of gear.
Roughly 90 minutes by car from Kumamoto Airport, why not come to Japan’s southernmost ski resort to experience winter sports?
