Mochida Burial Mounds, Takanabe Daishi
Japan Heritage burial mounds and unique stone statues that memorialize an ancient people
A total of 85 different burial mounds, or Kofun, are located throughout the Mochida Burial Mounds, including one of the largest circular mounds in Kyushu, all originally built between the early 4th and early 7th centuries. The site is also home to numerous uncovered artifacts that are designated as national important cultural properties. Alongside the nearby Saitobaru Burial Mounds, the site is designated as a Japan Heritage for preserving the same views as when the mounds were originally constructed. Located amongst tea fields, visitors can enjoy the scenic beauty of the area as well, including canola blossoms in spring, sunflowers in summer, and cosmos in the fall.
Visitors can also find Takanabe Daishi, a collection of roughly 750 unique stone statues constructed to console the spirits of the ancients buried in the Mochida Burial Mounds when they were hit by large-scale theft. Hanamoriyama, where Takanabe Daishi is located, offers a spectacular view of massive scale, including the community and rice paddies of Takanabe below, the Omaru River, and the Pacific Ocean off in the distance.
