湖水ケ池・水沼神社
Komizugaike lake, Mizunuma Shrine

This lake is completely covered in lotus leaves and white flowers

This lake with a circumference of roughly one kilometer stretches some distance to the north and south. Located close to the Tomidahama beach in Shintomi Town, it is one of the few birthing grounds for the loggerhead sea turtle.
In summertime, the surface of the lake is entirely covered in green lotus leaves and white blossoms, and many people come to see the lotus flowers when they bloom.  The lotus roots harvested in the wintertime, a rare variety only found in Komizugaike lake, are known for their sticky, soft, and stringy texture.  Mizunuma Shrine, said to have been built around the year 1700, can be found on the shore of the lake. The shrine is loved for enshrining a god related to farming and protection against water related troubles, and the lake itself behind the main shrine building is considered to be the god itself. There are trails all around the lake, making it a great place for taking a walk.
We recommend visiting in the early morning while it’s still not too hot to see the lotus flowers, which open early and close by the afternoon.
