美々津重要伝統的建造物群保存地区
Mimitsu Historical District
A port town echoing of a former time, and the site of Japanese mythology
The town of Mimitsu prospered as a port town from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. Today, much of the former town remains in the form of white earthen walls and cobblestone streets, and the area is nationally designated as a Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings. The Hyuga Historical and Folk Museum offers an exhibit featuring numerous valuable items such as historical documents and implements used in daily life.
We recommend taking a walk around this town that still echoes with a historic atmosphere of a former Japan. Some facilities let you look inside where you can get a glimpse of old ways of life, such as Mimitsu General Hall and the Mimitsu Town Center that serves a rest area and a shop for local goods. There have also been a number of cafes and gift shops opening up in recent years that leverage the scenic views of the town.
Mimitsu is mentioned in the myth of Hyuga in which Emperor Jinmu, the first emperor of Japan, set sail for the east. Accordingly, there is a sweet named after the myth, called Ofunade-dango, that Mimitsu is famous for.
