The seashore in Bungotakada City is home to a number of romantic destinations, such as the Awashimasha Shrine and Awashima Park, known for blessings for matchmaking, and the Matama Coast, known for its beautiful sunsets. The road that connects these destinations over a route covering approximately 20 kilometers is known as the Koi ga Kanau Michi, or Koikana Road for short, meaning the road where love comes true. So why not visit these endearing spots that are sure to attract love into your life?

[Day 1] Usa Shrine
A famous power spot in Oita offering blessings for matchmaking and marital bliss
This historic shrine, originally constructed in the year 725, occupies spacious grounds surrounded in virgin forest. Here you will find numerous historically and culturally important structures such as their beautiful, bright red main shrine building, designated as a national treasure.
Along the approach to the main shrine, there are two triangular paving stones known as the Meoto-ishi, or “couple rocks”. It is said that if a couple stand together on the two rocks simultaneously while holding hands, they will receive blessings in matchmaking and marital bliss.

Tour a network of hot springs known as the Hells of Beppu, fed by spring water that reaches nearly 100 degrees Celsius
Beppu Onsen is one of the most popular hot spring destinations in Japan. The area earned the name “the Hells of Beppu” from the decidedly hellish scenery caused by the numerous places where the steam and boiling water from the source spring emerges naturally from the ground.
There are seven different “hells” that visitors can travel between here, such as the mystical cobalt blue “Umi Jigoku” (sea hell). There are also plenty of restaurants around the hells serving local cuisine and a dish called “jigoku mushi”, or “hell-steamed”, that uses the steam of the hot springs to steam the ingredients.

This popular aquarium is located in an environment of abundant nature along Beppu Bay. It is known for bringing visitors closer to the sea creatures contained within. It is also a great place for a date with the beautiful presentation and romantic mood evoked by the fish lit up in the darkness or the jellyfish that change color in different light. Visitors can also enjoy walrus and dolphin shows here.

Tour workshops where the natural bath salt called Yunohana is made
Yunohana, a natural bath salt made especially at the Myoban Hot Spring, is produced inside workshops occupying quaint traditional thatched roof huts.
There are several Yunohana huts lined up on the grounds where you can take a free tour of Yunohana bath salt production that has been going on for 300 years. Why not pick up a souvenir while you’re at it?

[Day 2] Mount Atago Observatory
Beautiful night views in the holy land of love
The Mount Atago Observatory is located on Mount Atago, a mountain with an elevation of roughly 251 meters, located in central Nobeoka City. The observatory offers a panoramic view of the city and the Hyuga-nada Sea. The impressive views here have made the spot famous throughout Japan, specifically the beautiful nighttime views of the city and moon. If conditions are good, you can see the light of the full moon shining on the ocean, creating a path of light across the waves.
Legend has it that Mount Atago is where the god Ninigino Mikoto and the goddess Konohana Sakuyahime of Japanese mythology met and got married. There are bell and heart shaped monuments here commemorating that myth, making this a popular date spot among younger visitors. There are also four different shrines nearby, including Atago Shrine, which are visited by worshippers seeking to find the right marriage partner.

Chicken nanban is a dish that originated in Nobeoka City. The traditional dish consists of chicken fried in oil and topped with tartar sauce, but in Nobeoka, you can also try a second version that simply tops the chicken with a special sweet and sour sauce. [Day 2] The Sea-Cruz, where wishes come true
Come see mystical scenery woven by nature
This site gained its name of Cruz, or "cross" in Portuguese, for appearing like a cross when seen from above, stretching roughly 200 meters east to west and 220 meters north to south, a shape resulting from waves striking against a massive stone column over the years.
As the combination of this cross with the rock formation adjacent to it looks much like the Chinese character for wishes coming true, it is believed that the wishes of visitors here do, in fact, come true.

[Day 2] Tsuno Winery
Tsuno Wine is garnering attention the world over
In addition to wine, the Tsuno Winery offers amazing views of the Miyazaki Plains and the Hyuga-nada Sea. The wines made here using only Osuzu grapes harvested in Tsuno Town have received high praise throughout the world, and won many awards both in Japan and overseas. The winery tour, guided by one of the winemakers, lets you see the grape fields and fermenting facilities, and taste some of the wine as well.
The bakery cafe at the winery offers a selection of breads designed to pair well with Tsuno wine, and there are breads that can only be enjoyed here.
Meanwhile, the Tsuno Wine Harvest Festival is held every year in November, attracting many visitors.

The prestigious Tsuno Shrine boasts a history stretching over 2,700 years. Renowned as a power spot, the spacious grounds surrounded in forest produce a mystical and solemn atmosphere.
The shrine is believed to offer blessings for health, matchmaking, prosperity for your offspring, and success in business. The grounds are filled with a variety of attractions, such as the Kami-no-Ishi Shinji ceremony where you instill a stone with your wish and submit it as an offering in order for it to come true, Nade Taikoku that brings all manner of blessings when you pet it, and the Nade Usagi (petting rabbit) that offers blessings for good health.

Aoshima, a small island of 1.5 kilometers in circumference that is surrounded by the wavy rock formation known as the Devil’s Washboard, is itself a power spot. The abundant blessing of rich subtropical flora that grows throughout evokes an atmosphere of more southern climes. Meanwhile, the Aoshima Shrine located near the center of the island is popular for offering blessings for marriage and matchmaking. A popular power spot known for offering blessings in marriage
Aoshima Shrine is a popular tourist destination in Miyazaki. With the entire Aoshima island considered to be the shrine’s grounds, the main building of Aoshima Shrine is located at the center of the island, and worshippers can visit by traveling across Yayoi Bridge that stretches across to the island.
Aoshima shrine is the location for a famous myth and is said to offer blessings for marriage and matchmaking. If you visit, make sure to write down a wish on the heart shaped wooden plaque called the Ema and submit it as an offering, or pick a random Koi Mikuji that will offer love advice just for you. Another popular activity here among travelers is to seek out the many hidden heart shaped decorations.

The observation deck here, situated 50 meters above sea level, offers a panoramic view that includes the beautiful Pacific Ocean and wide blue sky, as well as the strange rock formation known as the Devil’s Washboard. [Day 3] Obi Castle Town, Katsuo Aburi Ju (seared bonito with rice)
A castle town known as the little Kyoto of Kyushu, featuring beautiful stone walls
Obi Castle Town was the first place in Kyushyu to be selected as a Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 1977. The streets of this town, known as the little Kyoto of Kyushu, feature surviving buildings from an earlier time, including stone walls made of Obi stone and samurai residences made with Obi cedar.
Gallery Kodama offers visitors a chance to try a dish local to Nichinan City called Katsuo Aburi Ju that consists of Katsuo, or bonito, flavored by marinating it in two types of sauces, lightly searing it in a small Japanese grill called a Shichirin, and placing it over rice.

[Day 3] Sunmesse Nichinan
This park faces the vast ocean and features impressive Moai statue replicas
Sunmesse Nichinan is symbolized by the seven replica Moai statues found here. These Moai statues are faithful replicas of those at Ahu Akivi, and the first to be officially approved by the elders of Rapa Nui (Easter Island). Visitors are allowed to touch them, so you can experience their impressive presence up close.
The spacious park occupying 20 hectares includes a world insect museum featuring displays of butterflies and insects from around the world, panels of world heritage sites approved by UNESCO, and ground murals of butterflies. Located on a small hill beside the Nichinan Seacoast, the park offers a panoramic view of the ocean, and every corner is a great spot for photos, so why not enjoy the many scenic spots as you walk throughout the park. The many attractive photo spots include a swing set that swings toward the sea and the colorful “voyeurn” statues (a Japanese play on words based on the French word voyeur) of seated observers.

[Day 3] Udo Jingu
One of the leading shrines in south Kyushu with the main shrine hidden in a cave
Udo Jingu features a beautiful and colorful vermillion-lacquered main shrine building within a cave on the cape that juts into the sea. This is one of the main shrines of southern Kyushu, located on the Nichinan Seacoast in southern Miyazaki. The shrine has long been loved by the locals and is believed to offer blessings for safe childbirth, child rearing, and marriage. Worshippers here can try a famous challenge involving tossing an Undama, or luck ball, to make their wish come true. Men use their left hand and women their right to throw the ball towards a rock called Kameishi, or turtle rock. In this custom called “Undama-nage”, If the ball enters a depression on the rock, then your wish will come true. The approach to the main shrine offers a beautiful view of the Hyuga-nada Sea, while rocks of many forms surround the cape as they accept the powerful beating of the waves.
Meanwhile, if you walk for about 20 minutes out the shrine gate from Udo Jingu, you will arrive at Namikiri Shrine. This place is considered a power spot, where the torii gate and tiny shrine, located in a cave right up against the encroaching sea, evoke a fantastic and spiritual atmosphere. We recommend wearing shoes with good grip when visiting, as the rough path to the shrine weaves through rocky terrain and you can slip easily.
