Cherry blossoms
Here we introduce the best destinations for cherry blossoms, called Sakura in Japanese, in each area of Miyazaki. Cherry blossoms generally bloom from mid March through early April. This list includes some spots for early cherry blossoms, that bloom as early as mid January, and a few lesser known out of the way spots as well. Before you head out for some cherry blossom viewing, check the schedule for the area, including when the blossoms will bloom and events such as nighttime viewing and illumination or cherry blossom festivals.

Hisamine General Park (Miyazaki City)

The cherry trees are illuminated at night during the blooming season, and towards the end of the season, you can enjoy a collaboration between the cherry blossoms and azaleas.

Amagajo Park (Miyazaki City)
This is one of the best places to see flowers in Miyazaki City, with about 1,200 cherry trees and 50,000 azaleas blossoming in the springtime. Amagajo castle is illuminated at night during the season, creating a mystical mood along with the Japanese lanterns. There is also a festival held called the Amagajo Kaimon Sakura Festival.

Darumizu Park (Miyazaki City)
The park is planted with roughly 3,500 cherry trees, including Yoshino Cherry, Japanese mountain, Yae, and Higan cherry, and the Cherry Road that passes through the park becomes a tunnel of cherry blossoms in the springtime. The park is popular as one of the best spots to see the cherry blossoms in Miyazaki City, and visitors for flower viewing are greeted with rows of a rank of cherry trees stretching about one kilometer in distance.

As part of that, projection mapping is used on the 19 meter tall stone wall that was originally built around the main castle building to protect against invaders.

Weeping cherry blossoms at Josenji temple (Gokase Town)
The weeping cherry at Josenji is approximately 300 years old and designated as a natural monument by Miyazaki Prefecture. There are at least 300 cherry trees planted throughout Gokase Town that were grown from clippings of this weeping cherry trees, and the light red flowers typically bloom around late March. While in bloom, they are illuminated at night, producing a mystical mood.

Kannonike Park (Miyakonojo City)
View moreThis park is decorated with about 3,000 cherry trees and 50,000 azaleas in the springtime, and visitors can view them from many different rides such as the Ferris wheel, go-carts, rental boats, and lifts. There are also plenty of other facilities like a hot spring bath, a campsite, and bungalows for staying overnight, giving something for you to fill the whole day with.

Makiba no Sakura (Kobayashi City)
View moreThis place was well loved during the first half of the 20th century as a great place to see cherry trees for being the number one spot in Kyushu for viewing rows of the trees along the road. Eventually the cherry trees reached the end of their lifespan, and the spot was abandoned, but it was later recreated thanks to the efforts of local residents. The tunnel of cherry blossoms created by the roughly 1,000 Yoshino Cherry trees along a roughly 2 kilometer length of road is breathtaking. In addition to nighttime illumination, you can also enjoy the nighttime cherry blossoms with fireworks at the Makiba no Sakura Festival.

Nango Castle Ruins (Nichinan City)
Known as a place to see early blooming cherry blossoms, the ruins of Nango Castle, located at the top of a hill near Odotsu, features about 50 cherry trees of the Kawazu cherry trees that start blooming in mid January, producing an early glimpse of springtime against the famed silhouette of the Nanatsubae rocks and Oshima off the coast of Nichinan as well as the Kokuzo islands.

Winter cherry blossoms at JR Kitago Station - Nichinan Kanzaki 1-go (Nichinan City)

British Garden at the Kokusai Kaihin Entrance Plaza (Miyazaki City)
The Kokusai Kaihin Entrance Plaza is home to an English style garden that features the grassy lawn area with colorful flowers and greenery, the Seseragi-brook area, and a beautiful garden complete with a garden house. From March through May, the Spring Flower Garden Show is hosted during which the English Garden is filled with a variety of flowers such as tulips and snapdragons.

Green Park Ebino (Ebino City)

View moreNearly one million canola flowers and 300 Kawazu cherry trees blossom along the banks of the Gokase river. Numerous flowers bloom in order in Nobeoka City between early February and early April, including plum, cherry blossom, canola flowers, and camellias, and at this time, the Nobeoka Hana Monogatari (Nobeoka Flower Story) festival is held, one of the leading events in Nobeoka. The main event of the festival, the Konohana Walk held in late February, features numerous stages and dining options surrounded by the blooming cherry blossoms and canola flowers.

Takachiho Farm (Miyakonojo City)

Azaleas
Shiibae Park (Mimata Town)
Commonly known as Tsutsujigaoka, after the Japanese name for azaleas, “Tsutsuji”, this park is home to approximately 60,000 azaleas of the Kurume variety. The panoramic view from the park’s observation deck combining the azaleas with the surrounding greenery of the mountains is definitely worth the trip. Meanwhile, the Shiibae Park Tsutsuji Festival held from early through mid April attracts countless tourists.

Mt. Takatori Park (Saito City)

Today, the ruins have been redeveloped as a park. Visitors in the spring are greeted by over 1,000 cherry trees and 150 azaleas, which attracts countless tourists. The Maizuru Park Sakura Festival is also held every year from late March through early April.

Hagi-no-Chaya (Kobayashi City)

Kannonike Park (Miyakonojo City)

The park holds the only Ferris wheel in Miyazaki Prefecture, which offers a panoramic view encompassing the city of Miyakonojo and the Kirishima mountains on a clear day. And of course the sight of the flowers seen from above is amazing.

Mt. Futagami Summit Observatory (Takachiho Town)
Mt. Futagami, or literally “two peaks” in Japanese, is located on the border between Takachiho and Gokase towns and is divided into Odake (male peak) and Medake (female peak), as the name implies. It is famous as a mountain where Akebono azaleas bloom, and the area where they grow can be seen on the easy-to-climb hiking trail up Odake. The observatory at the peak of Medake offers an amazing panoramic view taking in Aso, the Kuju mountains, and Mount Sobo.

Florante Miyazaki (Miyazaki City)
Florante Miyazaki is a place where you can see plants from around the world throughout the year, and also hosts plenty of events. Among those, the Spring Floral Festival, a flower festival featuring the park’s main attraction of spring tulips and petunias at their most fresh and beautiful during the year, is held from mid March through late May every year.

Miyakoh Botanic Garden Aoshima (Miyazaki City)
View moreIn addition to tropical plants such as the Chinese fan palm, the Canary Island date palm, the queen palm, and the date palm, this botanic garden also features colorful flowers that exemplify Miyazaki Prefecture, such as bougainvillea and hibiscus. A Spring Flower Show is held here every year from mid March through early April, during which the garden is filled with other spring flowers including poppies and snapdragons.

Ikoma Plateau (Kobayashi City)
View moreThe vast plateau at the foot of the Kirishima Mountains is one of the top places in the prefecture to see seasonal flowers. Visitors here in mid April can enjoy upwards of 150,000 California and Icelandic poppies. The plateau is also completely covered in cosmos starting in early October. There are several viewing points installed throughout the park which make great photo spots.

Nobeoka Botanical Gardens (Nobeoka City)
View moreThis park is completely filled with flowers during the Spring Flower Festa which lasts from early April through early May. The 50,000 flowers in roughly 20 different varieties, including pink campion, baby blue eyes, and petunias, and their blossoms comprise a backdrop for numerous events. The gardens are divided into numerous sections each featuring different flowers and trees, including a Japanese water iris garden and shrubbery gardens of azaleas and rhododendrons (Rhododendron indicum), as well as many other flower beds.
Jacaranda
Jacaranda no Mori - Roadside Station Nango (Nichinan City)
The Jacaranda is one of the three most famous flowering trees in the world. Considered native to the tropics, it is known for its elegant and graceful purple coloration. Jacaranda Forest, the only jacaranda grove in Japan, is situated adjacent to Roadside Station Nango. Here, the nearly 1,000 jacaranda trees bloom from late May through late June, filling the forest with a beautiful, mystical light. The Jacaranda Festival is held during this period, featuring nighttime illumination, events on stage, and a chance to try out special products from the area for free.
Rhododendrons
Shakunage-no-Mori (Mimata Town)
This is the largest rhododendron park in Japan, which was created along the Okimizu River that flows through Mimata Town. Here, nearly 30,000 rhododendrons of 500 different varieties from around the world are planted, creating a beautiful forest of flowers in the springtime. Meanwhile, the Shakunage Flower Festival attracts countless visitors from late March through Golden Week in May each year.

Sangasho Jinja (Gokase Town)
View moreWhen April arrives at this shrine, roughly 300 weeping cherry blossoms and 14,000 rhododendrons bloom, just in time for a Spring festival (the Shakunage Festival - Shakunage is the Japanese name for Rhododendron subg. Hymenanthes) on the third Sunday of April. The rhododendrons continue to bloom until mid May, and attract people from throughout Japan.

Hokkedake Park (Kunitomi Town)
View moreHokkedake Park features a variety of facilities on its vast, spacious grounds surrounded in the bounty of nature, such as a grass ski slope, and nearly 1,000 cherry trees and 500 rhododendrons bloom here in the springtime. A tourist lift service operates in the park, and the view of the Miyazaki plain and the Hyuga-Nada Sea from the top is amazing.

Camellia
Shiroyama Park (Nobeoka City)
Over 3,300 Yabu camellias of 108 different varieties grow naturally at Shiroyama Park on the ruins of Nobeoka castle, making it one of the largest three locations for Yabu camellias in Japan. The best time to see them is from December through March, when the flowers bloom in vibrant reds, whites, and pinks, as well as with shibori and fukurin patterns.

Awakigahara Forest Park (Miyazaki City)
View moreThis vast forest park stretching 10 kilometers from north to south includes a camellia garden and a road lined with camellias on both sides, for a total of over 340 camellias of nearly 70 different varieties for your viewing pleasure. The different camellias start blooming one after the other beginning in mid January and lasting through March.

Tsubakiyama Forest Park (Miyazaki City)
View moreTsubakiyama Forest Park is the first park in Japan to be recognized as a camellia garden of excellence by the International Camellia Society. The park features a total of approximately 48,000 camellias in nearly 1,000 different varieties, both single and double flowers, but with a focus on the Yabu camellia variety.
