Cape Toi in Kushima City is a special spot where you can enjoy the magnificent nature and encounter wild horses. The cape is a scenic area with a coastline and lush green grasslands, where the "Misaki Horses," designated as a national natural monument, are being raised.
These horses, a native Japanese breed with a history of about 300 years, currently number around 100. These horses originated from the Takanabe Domain's ranch during the Edo period and are now protected by the local community.
Today, these horses live freely in the natural surroundings of Cape Toi. The management of these horses has remained almost unchanged, with little human intervention, which is why they are often referred to as "Toi's Wild Horses." They are a rare and unique sight that can only be seen in this area.
Visitors are encouraged to join tours led by local guides for an enriching experience.
The "Option" Wild Horse Guide is led by Akiko Serata, who was born and raised in Kushima City. Your journey begins at the Toi Cape Tourist Exchange Center PAKALAPAKA.
Here, you’ll gather before embarking on a guided tour to learn about the Misaki Horses and their habitat. Akiko’s deep local knowledge and passion for the area provide a unique and insightful experience, making this tour an excellent choice for anyone visiting Cape Toi.
Maintain a safe distance of about 3 meters (10 feet) from the horses to observe them safely.Feeding the horses is strictly prohibited.
The Misaki horses are said to form around 15 herds. Some herds are led by a stallion with multiple mares, while others have the opposite dynamic. Interestingly, some horses choose to stay solitary, especially outside the mating season.
Cape Toi is accessible by car, but be mindful that horses often wander onto the roads. For safety, please keep your speed under 30 kilometers per hour.
The horses remain indifferent to humans, as they are neither fed by people nor heavily interacted with, except during the annual grass burning and health check-ups. They neither run away nor approach visitors. This makes Toi Cape an excellent place to learn about sustainable coexistence between humans and nature.
Foals lying comfortably on the grass add to the charm of Toi Cape. Spring, from April to May, marks the birthing season for these adorable foals, whose endearing presence is sure to warm your heart.
The "rindo" flowers, scientifically known as Gentiana, are typically shorter than usual and have adapted to the unique environment of Toi Cape. These plants coexist harmoniously with the land and the wild horses in this special area.
The manure of the horses is home to dung beetles (Centriconachus). Visitors can observe this natural cycle in action, highlighting the interconnectedness of life in the area.
Additionally, the contrast between the horses galloping across the grasslands and the vast ocean is a captivating sight, making it an unmissable spot for photography enthusiasts.
Following the guide’s instructions, as you enter the forest, you may come across the remains of some of the horses.
Around the age of 14 or 15, their strength begins to decline, and they quietly disappear, meeting their end in the forest. They become sustenance for wild animals, allowing the cycle of life to continue.
For those interested, guided tours are available to the "Misaki Shrine" and the "Cape Toi Lighthouse" within Cape Toi.
The "Misaki Shrine" is an ancient shrine believed to have been established in 708. The subtropical forest of sago palms (Cycas ソテツ), designated as a National Natural Monument, grows naturally here. It represents the northernmost limit of their natural habitat, making it of great scientific value.
The main shrine is built into the cliffside and is revered as a deity of matchmaking and as a maritime safety.
During the New Year, it becomes a popular spot to view the first sunrise of the year. "The sun rises from over there," guides Akiko, pointing toward the horizon.
The Cape Toi Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse that was completed in 1929.
You can enter the lighthouse and enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view.
Each of these spots is a wonderful place worth visiting at least once in a lifetime. Be sure to visit and experience the grandeur of nature and the harmonious coexistence between humans and the environment.
